What hydro jetting does that a snake cannot
Hydro jetting sends water through a flexible hose at very high pressure and out of a nozzle that fires backward and sideways. The jets strip grease, soap scum, scale and fine roots off the inside of the pipe. A cable, by comparison, bores a hole through the blockage and leaves the coating behind.
That difference explains the pattern many callers describe: the drain was snaked, ran freely for a few weeks, then clogged again at the same spot. The pipe was never actually clean. Jetting restores the full diameter, and it can carry debris all the way to the municipal connection instead of pushing it a few feet downstream.
Jetting should be done within the pipe manufacturer's pressure limits, and any pipe repair that follows must meet the International Plumbing Code (IPC) as adopted in El Reno.
When a backed-up main needs jetting right away
Why a sewage backup is not a wait-until-morning problem
A main line backup sends wastewater into the lowest drain in the house, usually a tub, shower or floor drain. That water carries bacteria, and it soaks flooring quickly. If a cable could not clear the line, or the line clogs under the same conditions every time it rains or the laundry runs, jetting is often the next step.
- Stop all water use, including toilets, until the line is cleared.
- Move rugs, boxes and electronics away from the affected drain.
- Ask the plumber to run a camera before and after, so you can see the result.
Signs the pipe is coated rather than blocked
Clogs return in weeks
A line that clears and then fails again in the same place almost always has buildup left on the walls.
Slow drains in every bathroom
A coating thick enough to reduce the whole line's capacity slows every fixture gradually.
Gurgling after cable service
Air still struggling past scale in the pipe is a sign the cable did not restore full flow.
Greasy smell from the sink
Kitchen lines in busy homes and small restaurants collect fats that harden as they cool.
Cable versus jetter: an honest comparison
Cable machine
- Quick and low cost for a one-time clog
- Works through a small cleanout
- Leaves grease and scale on the pipe wall
- Roots return unless cut at the joint
Hydro jetter
- Removes buildup from the pipe wall
- Handles grease, scale and many root masses
- Often a longer visit with more equipment
- Not for collapsed or badly broken pipe
A plumber should look at the line first. Jetting a cracked clay pipe can push water into the surrounding soil, which is why a camera check often comes before the jet.
Same clog, third time this year?
Describe the pattern when you call, and we will talk through whether jetting makes sense.
Jetting for restaurants, shops and older homes in El Reno
Kitchens along the downtown corridor see heavy grease, and the city's annual Fried Onion Burger Day Festival, held the first Saturday in May since 1988, is a reminder of how much frying happens in this town. A restaurant drain that handles that volume benefits from scheduled jetting, ahead of a rush rather than during one. Business owners can read more on our commercial plumbing page.
Homes are the other half of the work. In older neighborhoods the lines can be clay, cast iron or an early plastic, and roots or scale narrow them over decades. Jetting is a fair option there as long as a camera confirms the pipe is intact.
What changes the cost of a jetting visit
Hydro jetting questions
Yes. The emergency line is answered 24/7. For a backed-up main at night, the plumber will assess the line first and jet when the pipe is safe to do it, otherwise clear it with a cable and schedule the jetting.
It depends on the pipe. Sound cast iron and clay often handle it well, but a cracked, collapsed or heavily corroded pipe can be damaged. That is why a camera look comes first on older lines.
Longer than a cable in most cases, because the wall is clean. It is not permanent. Grease and wipes will rebuild the buildup, and open roots will regrow, so ask about a repeat schedule for a busy kitchen.
It cuts and flushes many roots, especially fine ones. A thick root mass at a broken joint usually needs a cutter first and a repair after, since the joint stays open.
Not when the pipe is sound. The water runs inside the line and exits at the municipal connection or the plumber's recovery point. A leaking pipe is the exception, which the camera should rule out.
Clear the area around the cleanout or the nearest drain, note when the problem started and which fixtures are affected, and keep pets and children away from the work area.
Services that often go with jetting
Before the jet
A camera inspection tells you whether the pipe can take the pressure.
After the jet
If the camera shows a crack or a sag, sewer line repair comes next, not another cleaning.
Piedmont homes
Fast-growing Piedmont, 73078 has newer lines, so jetting there is usually about grease and construction debris.
