When a clogged drain is an emergency
Four things to do before the plumber arrives
Not every clog is urgent. A single slow bathroom sink can wait for a daytime visit. A drain becomes an emergency when wastewater is rising, when several fixtures are affected at once, or when the smell tells you sewage is involved.
- Stop using every sink, tub, shower and toilet that shares the blocked line.
- Turn off the washing machine and dishwasher mid-cycle if they drain into the same pipe.
- Do not pour chemical drain cleaner into standing water. It can burn skin and makes the plumber's work more hazardous.
- Keep children and pets away from any water that came up out of a floor drain or toilet.
How drain clogs show up in El Reno homes
The first sign is rarely a total blockage. Most clogs announce themselves weeks earlier, and recognizing the pattern tells the plumber where to start.
One fixture drains slowly
A single sink or tub with a slow, gurgling drain usually has a hair, soap or grease buildup in its own branch line.
Two or more fixtures slow at once
When the tub and a nearby toilet both struggle, the blockage is past where their branches join.
Washer standpipe overflows
Laundry water backing up through the standpipe or a floor drain points to the main line, not the washer.
Toilet bubbles when a sink drains
Air pushed back through the traps means the main line is partly blocked and close to a full backup.
Kitchen sink clogs have their own causes
Kitchen drains clog differently from bathroom drains. Cooking grease cools inside the pipe and coats the walls, then catches rice, coffee grounds and food fibers until the opening is the size of a pencil. A disposal grinds food finely but does nothing about the grease that carries it.
If the sink backs up into the other basin of a double sink, the trouble is usually in the shared trap arm or the first few feet of the wall line, which a cable can reach quickly. If water also appears in the dishwasher, the dishwasher drain connects to the same blockage. A stuck or humming disposal is a separate repair, covered on our garbage disposal repair page.
Drain and vent sizing follows the International Plumbing Code (IPC), which El Reno adopts with local amendments, so a plumber who changes a drain layout should be able to point to the section that allows it.
Which cleaning method fits which clog
Plumbers choose between three tools, and the right one depends on what is in the pipe and how often the clog returns.
| Method | Best for | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Hand auger or sink cable | Single fixtures, hair and soap clogs, trap arms | Does not scour the pipe wall, so grease returns |
| Drum machine and cutting head | Main lines, roots and heavy buildup 50 feet or more out | Needs a cleanout or an open vent to enter the line |
| Hydro jetting | Grease, scale and repeated clogs that cables only punch through | Not suited to collapsed or badly cracked pipe |
| Camera inspection | Clogs that keep coming back, or a line that stops a cable | A diagnosis tool that finds the cause, not a cleaning step |
Older lines near the Rock District, newer lines on the edges
El Reno was incorporated in 1890, and the blocks around the Rock District and the old Carnegie Library hold some of the city's oldest buildings. Older sewer laterals in neighborhoods like that can be clay or cast iron, and they tend to shed scale and let tree roots in at the joints.
A cable clears the roots, but roots in a joint grow back, which is why a repeat clog in an older house is a reason to schedule a camera look.
The city's own plumbing code also matters here. Chapter 142 of the El Reno code requires a backwater valve on a building sewer that connects to the public sewer. If wastewater came up in the lowest drain of your house during a heavy rain, ask whoever you hire whether a valve is installed and working, because a stuck valve causes backups that look like a clog.
Drain backing up right now?
A plumber is on call all night and on weekends. Tell us which fixtures are affected.
When the drain line itself is leaking
Sometimes a drain keeps clogging because the pipe has a belly or a crack where solids settle. A leaking drain line under a slab or in a crawlspace can also leave a damp spot, a musty smell, or a patch of soft flooring that has nothing to do with the supply lines.
A camera run shows whether the pipe is sound. If it is cracked or sagging, the fix moves from cleaning to sewer line repair, and the camera footage gives you something concrete to show an insurance adjuster or a landlord.
What affects the price of drain cleaning
A drain cleaning visit is priced by the job, not by a flat number that fits every clog. You get a clear price before any work starts.
Homeowner policies often cover sudden water damage from a backup only if an endorsement is attached, and they rarely pay for the clog itself. Check your policy before you assume either way.
Drain cleaning questions from El Reno homeowners
Yes. The line is answered 24/7, including holidays, and a licensed plumber is scheduled the same day when one is available. Tell the dispatcher which fixtures are backing up and whether water is reaching the floor, so the right equipment is on the truck.
Skip it when water is standing in the fixture. Caustic cleaners sit in the pipe, damage some finishes and are a burn risk for whoever opens the trap. A plastic drain stick or a plunger is the safer first move.
Grease is the usual reason. It lines the pipe wall, so each cable clears a hole but leaves the coating behind. Jetting removes the coating, and changing what goes down the drain slows it from returning.
Look at what else reacts. If a tub or floor drain bubbles when a toilet flushes or the washer drains, or if more than one fixture is slow, the blockage is past the branches in the main line.
Yes. Landlords, property managers and small businesses call the same line, and the plumber can document the cause so a lease or work order can assign the cost properly.
Ask when you call. A camera is worth it after a second clog in the same line within a few months, since it shows whether roots, a sag or a crack is the cause.
Routine cleaning does not usually involve a permit. Rules vary, so ask the El Reno Community Development office at 405-262-2000 if the job turns into a pipe replacement.
Other drain and sewer services
A clog that keeps returning
If a cable only buys a few weeks, hydro jetting scours the pipe wall instead of poking a hole through the blockage.
Backup in the main line
A whole-house backup is a job for sewer line cleaning, which reaches the main from a cleanout.
